Prior Consent for Counseling Services

School Counselors provide a wide array of services, working both with groups and individuals in the areas of social, academic, behavioral, mental, and emotional health, including providing classroom lessons, class scheduling, credit recovery, career planning, substance abuse prevention lessons, and facilitating collaboration amongst parents/guardians, teachers, support staff, administration, and students. School counselors do NOT provide therapeutic counseling but rather short-term, solution-focused counseling. School counselors recognize family or guardians' legal and inherent rights to be the guiding voice in their children’s lives, including those found in the Idaho Parental Rights Act. (Section 33-6001, Idaho Code) and Parental Rights in Medical Decision Making (Section 32-1015, Idaho Code). In order to address these legal requirements, we ask that parents take a moment to provide prior consent for their child to see a school counselor in the event that they are dealing with an issue that goes beyond academic school counseling. As always, our counselors will continue to adhere to Idaho’s Parental Rights Law and communicate with parents/guardians when a student indicates a change to their mental or physical health.
